With three active Scouts in the house, my contribution to it is in the design of Scout patches. This past weekend, they had Cub Fun Day where various Boy Scout troops put on different activities for area Cub Scouts. It's basically a recruitment drive but it also helps keep boys interested in Scouting. This year, they had their first ever chili cookoff so they wanted that reflected in the patch.

At the left is the original design and next to it are the actual patches. The yellow edging is for participants and the red edging is for staff -- I got both because I wound up in the craft booth, teaching kids how to paint wolf neckerchief slides... about 500 of them. I'm still whupped!!

That's cool

Having my step daughter be in the Juniors this year up coming, I was wondering. How does one get into making these badges? Is it a contest sort of thing, or do that Scouts have specific people they contact for it? Thsi is something that actually grabbed my attention, since I have no clue where the designs for most of the badges come from. Some of them are awesome though. ;)

In my case, I got into making patches because my husband had come home from a scoutmaster conference with the url for an online patch manufacturer (patchplace.com) and the idea of doing an event patch. He messed around with it in Photoshop until I told him to get out of way. *L* To date, I've done twelve patches and three t-shirts for Scouts. Most places prefer that you work in CorelDraw but .eps PS files are acceptable. You have to make sure that you separate the colors for printing but that's easy.

O.O Oh wow that's awesome. I'll have to keep that in mind. XD hehe. :) I bet your hubby was both pleased if a bit crest fallen. ;) *g*

That is one skill that I've never learned. How /do/ you do color separations set ups for printing? I actually lost a job a few years ago because i didn't know how to do that. *shakes fist at the t-shirt factory* gr.

Easy... make each layer a different color. You're generally working with a limited palette because more colors increase the price of the patch. I was familiar with the concept because I took lithography in college which has the same principles.

*blinks* Wow I feel stupid. *laughs*

Okay, and depending on the type of printer machinery it would be C M Y K (or in some rarer cases as I understand it, R G B)

Very nice design, I think it translated into stitch well which can be difficult
